Why memorize the Quran/Why should you memorize the Quran?

If we want to know why we memorize the Quran, we will need first to read about what the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said about that.

Hadith about memorizing Quran

The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) wanted us to read and memorize the Holy Qur’an and not to abandon the Holy Qur’an by mentioning the virtues of the Holy Qur’an many times in his sayings.

And all such sayings show the great return that a Muslim enjoys not only in this life but also in the hereafter.
We are mentioning in our essay today not only a Hadith about memorizing the Quran but also, a set of prophet sayings on the virtue of memorizing the Holy Qur’an.

And one of the most important prophet sayings that show the reward of memorizing the Holy Qur’an is:
‘Uqba b. ‘Amir said he heard God’s messenger say, “If the Qur’ān were put in a skin and thrown into the fire it would not burn.” Mishkat al-Masabih 2140
Here, in this Hadith about memorizing Quran, it’s clear that the one who memorizes the Holy Quran and it’s kept in his mind and heart won’t enter Hell, his body won’t touch Hell.

And actually, this is the main benefit and virtue of memorizing the Holy Quran. Other benefits of memorizing the Quran in the hereafter are mentioned in the following lines:

What are the benefits of memorizing the Quran in the hereafter?

Why is it important to memorize the Quran?

Why you should memorize the Quran?

1-Obtaining the greatest ranks on the Day of resurrection is one of the benefits of memorizing the Quran in the hereafter:
God has honored the readers and those who memorized the Holy Quran to have the highest ranks on the Day of Resurrection, and they will be in accompany of the holy and righteous angels.

‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin Al-‘As (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The one who was devoted to the Qur’an will be told on the Day of Resurrection: ‘Recite and ascend (in ranks) as you used to recite when you were in the world. Your rank will be at the last Ayah you recite.”‘

Riyad as-Salihin 1001

Narrated Aisha:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Such a person as recites the Qur’an and masters it by heart, will be with the noble righteous scribes (in Heaven). And such a person exerts himself to learn the Qur’an by heart, and recites it with great difficulty, will have a double reward.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 4937

2-Wearing the special crown and suit of dignity:
God has honored the people of the Holy Quran by wearing the crown of dignity. and the suit of dignity on the day of resurrection in the hereafter. So, if someone asks you one day why is it important to memorize the Quran? You can tell him that special reward in the hereafter.

Narrated Abu Hurairah:

That the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“The one who memorized the Qur’an shall come on the Day of Judgement and (the reward for reciting the Qur’an) says: ‘O Lord! Decorate him.”

So he is donned with a crown of nobility. Then it says: “O Lord! Give him more!’ So he is donned with a suit of nobility.

Then it says: “O Lord! Be pleased with him.’ So He is pleased with him and says: “Recite and rise up, and be increased in reward with every Ayah.'”

Darussalam: Vol. 5, Book 42, Hadith 2915

3-Obtaining the intercession of the Holy Qur’an on the day of resurrection:
As the Holy Qur’an will intercede on the Day of Resurrection those who were memorizing and reading it.

Abū Umāma said he heard God’s messenger say, “Recite the Qur’ān, for on the day of resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite it. Recite the two shining ones, Baqara and sūra Āl Imrān (Qur’ān, 2 and 3). For on the day of resurrection, they will come as two clouds, or two flocks of birds in ranks* pleading for those who recite them. Recite sūra al-Baqara, for using it produces blessing and abandoning it produces regret, and the slothful are unable to recite it.”

Mishkat al-Masabih 2120

This hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) answers the question “why is it important to memorize the Quran?” very well.

Who was the first person to memorize the Holy Quran?

Prophet Muhammad – peace be upon him- was the first one to memorize the Holy Qur’an. Gabriel – peace be upon him – used to bring verses to him and Prophet Muhammad was hearing them eagerly.

Then he started to repeat them with great intensity and with great focus and fear of forgetting them until Allah the almighty told him in a verse:
“Do not rush your tongue trying to memorize ˹a revelation of˺ the Quran. It is certainly upon Us to ˹make you˺ memorize and recite it. So once We have recited a revelation ˹through Gabriel˺, follow its recitation ˹closely˺. Then it is surely upon Us to make it clear ˹to you˺.”

Surat Al-Qiyama Verse 16:19

However, by the expected repetition of reading it, Prophet Muhammad memorized it. After that, he started to recite it slowly to his companions so that it would be easier for them to memorize it deep in their hearts and minds. The Messenger of God – May God bless him and grant him peace – was illiterate, and God Almighty sent him to a people of whom most of them were illiterate.

As it was mentioned in the Holy Qur’an:

“He is the One Who raised for the illiterate ˹people˺ a messenger from among themselves—reciting to them His revelations, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom, for indeed they had previously been clearly astray.”

Al-Jumu’a verse 2

So, though the prophet was illiterate and some Muslims were illiterate, too, they could memorize the Holy Qur’an.
So, Prophet Muhammad was the first person to memorize the Holy Quran.

Then, it was memorized by many of the Companions – may Allah be pleased with them – including the Caliphs, also, Talha bin Al-Zubayr, Saad bin Abi Waqas, Ibn Masoud, Abu Hurairah, Abdullah bin Abbas, and Amr bin Al-Aas – may God be pleased with them all.

First female hafiz of Quran

Memorizing the Holy Qur’an was not only for the sahaba men. Yes, the sahaba men were the first to memorize the Book of Allah, learn it and agree on it, however, they were also racing to pass it on to their women and other Muslim women in general.

And the First female hafiz of the Quran from the Prophet (PBUH) are:

1-The mother of the believers Aisha, the daughter of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq. (First female hafiz of Quran(
2-The mother of the believers, Hafsa, the daughter of Omar ibn al-Khattab, may God bless them.
3-The mother of the believers or Om Salamah, may God bless her.
